Banff is experiencing a mixed bag of weather this week, with forecasts predicting a chilly start to the season with 10-15 cm of snow, and a later forecast for an even more significant dump of 20-30 cm. This fresh powder has bumped avalanche danger to high in Banff and surrounding areas, prompting warnings for visitors. On a more positive note, wildlife is emerging, with a "familiar furry resident" spotted waking from hibernation and the Banff bison herd growing to over 130 animals, leading Parks Canada to consider program expansion. While the elk population has declined, this is seen as beneficial for the park's ecosystem.
In terms of community and events, Banff is buzzing with activity. The town has been recognized as a top spring break nightlife destination globally, a welcome boost for tourism. The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is underway, with various screenings and reviews highlighting its diverse content. The town's first ski resort, Norquay, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. However, there are challenges on the horizon, with concerns about a potential staff shortage and rising housing costs threatening future summer travel. Housing remains a local discussion point, with opposition to a proposed accessory dwelling and owners backing away from a contentious development.
Community initiatives are also making headlines. Banff is facing a "critical need" for more child care space, and a job fair is aiming to fill 600 seasonal positions. The Town of Banff is also implementing measures like mandating secure bicycle parking and closing invasive weeds loopholes. The Banff and Macduff Men’s Shed received The King's Award for Voluntary Service. On a less positive note, a kidney-attacking fish disease has been detected in two lakes within the park. Finally, Banff National Park has set another visitor record, with 4.5 million visitors recorded in 2025, and a rare train ride through Jasper and Banff National Parks is being offered this summer.
